How We Got Here

Emerald Fern Finishes didn't start with a business plan. It started with a breaking point.

After years inside corporate America — navigating layoffs, inequity, and systems designed to extract rather than build — we realized something: the game wasn't broken. It was working exactly as designed. Just not for people like us.

So we stopped trying to win someone else's game and started building our own.

This is the story of how we got here — and why we're doing this differently.

Our Story

Why We Built Emerald Fern Finishes

By the time we were ready to launch Emerald Fern Finishes , we knew a few things for certain:

The system isn't broken — it's working exactly as designed.

Big-box retailers, online mega-platforms, and corporate distributors extract wealth from communities. They centralize profit. They underpay workers. They lobby for policies that benefit shareholders, not people.

We're not interested in being part of that.

Homeowners deserve better.

Renovation shouldn't require a PhD to navigate. Pricing shouldn't be a mystery. Product quality shouldn't be a gamble. And your purchase shouldn't fund systems built on exploitation.

Representation matters — but only if it creates real change.

We're one of the only Black- and woman-owned distributors for many of the product lines we carry — in the entire United States.

That's not something to celebrate. It's evidence of how deeply this industry has been gatekept.

But it also means we have an opportunity — and a responsibility — to build something that opens doors for others, not just ourselves.

Workers deserve dignity.

We're building a business where:

  • People earn six figures doing work that matters
  • Four-day workweeks are the norm, not a fantasy
  • Employees have equity, not just paychecks
  • Work funds life instead of consuming it

If that works, those employees don't just show up for a company. They show up for their communities. They spend locally. They support other families.

That's how economies heal — through people, not platforms.

What We Built Together

Distribution, Pricing & Systems

Camille Johnson

Camille built her career in corporate sales, working across hospitality, medical services, and building materials before entering the building supply world. She spent years inside one of the largest distributors in the country, learning how vendor relationships are formed, how pricing is structured, and who gets access — and who doesn’t.

She saw firsthand how supply chains really work behind the marketing. How “Made in America” messaging often masks global sourcing. How layoffs hit the hardest workers while protecting those closest to power. And how the system wasn’t broken — it was functioning exactly as designed, just not for most people.

That experience shaped everything Emerald Fern Finishes would become: transparent pricing, honest guidance, and a refusal to play games that leave homeowners confused or overcharged.

Operations, Jobsites & Execution

Dr Marcus Johnson

Marcus transitioned from managing healthcare clinics to managing construction job sites, bringing the same precision, accountability, and care from patient environments into people’s homes.

He oversaw real jobsites — coordinating trades, timelines, and quality control — and understands which products actually perform once they leave the showroom. His background bridges two worlds: systems-driven operations and hands-on execution.

That perspective ensures Emerald Fern Finishes isn’t just selling products that look good online, but materials that hold up in real homes, under real conditions, with real people relying on them.

It worked locally. Now, we’re scaling it nationwide.

Like many families, we did what we were told would lead to stability: get educated, work hard, stay loyal, and do everything “right.” And still, we couldn’t save $1,000 — not for a down payment, not for an emergency — despite long hours and full commitment.

That was the moment we stopped trying to win someone else’s game and started building our own.

We took what we knew — supply chains, project management, vendor relationships, and customer service — and built a model that worked: high-quality products, fair pricing, and real guidance without the inflated markups or pressure tactics.

Why This Matters for You

When you shop with Emerald Fern Finishes, you're not just buying cabinets, flooring, or tile.
You're supporting:
  • A Black- and woman-owned business building infrastructure in an industry that historically excluded us
  • Transparent pricing and ethical sourcing
  • Workers who earn living wages and have equity in what they build
  • A business that reinvests in community, not offshore accounts

You're voting for a different system.

What We're Building

An ethical alternative

to big-box monopolies and extractive online platforms

A transparent marketplace

where pricing, sourcing, and values are visible — not hidden behind corporate PR

A people-first business

designed to circulate wealth, not extract it

A proof of concept

that a different model can work

We're not trying to become a billion-dollar corporation. We're trying to prove that businesses can:

Pay fair
wages. Source ethically
Serve customers
honestly. And create pathways for others
who've been locked out

The Truth About Risk

Here's what every "just start your own business" story skips:
90% of small businesses fail.

Only 2% of construction companies are Black-owned.

There are virtually no Black-owned product distributors.
We launched without:
  • Private equity
  • Wealthy family backing
  • Safety nets
  • Generational wealth
We jumped knowing the odds.
Not because we're fearless — but because staying in systems that were breaking us wasn't an option.

And we jumped anyway.

What Happens Next

We don't know yet if people will show up.

We don't know if homeowners will choose intention over convenience.

We don't know if this model can scale.

But we know this:

We can't unknow what we've seen.

And we can't build anything honest without telling the truth first.

This is our story.

And this is what we're building.
