Tile & Backsplash Calculation Guide

Get the Right Amount —Every Time

Nothing derails a tile project faster than running short mid-installation or massively over-ordering. This guide walks you through calculating exactly how much tile you need for floors, walls, backsplashes, and specialty installations—with the right overage built in.

Why Accurate Calculations Matter

Running short means:

  • Project delays while waiting for additional tile
  • Potential dye lot mismatches (even "identical" tiles vary between batches)
  • Rush shipping fees
  • Frustrated contractors and extended timelines

Over-ordering means:

  • Wasted money on materials you can't return
  • Storage issues for leftover boxes
  • Environmental waste

Getting it right means:

  • Your project stays on schedule
  • Budget stays intact
  • One less thing to stress about

The Basic Formula

For Rectangular Spaces:

Length (feet) × Width (feet) = Square Footage

Example:

  • Backsplash area: 10 feet long × 2 feet tall = 20 square feet
  • Floor space: 12 feet × 10 feet = 120 square feet

Step-by-Step Calculation

STEP 1: Measure Your Space

For Backsplashes:

  • Measure the length of the wall(s) in inches
  • Measure the height (typically from counter to cabinets)
  • Note any outlets, windows, or obstructions

For Floors:

  • Measure the length and width of the room
  • Note any closets, alcoves, or irregular areas
  • Measure these separately and add to total

For Showers/Tub Surrounds:

  • Measure each wall section separately
  • Include height from tub/pan to ceiling
  • Measure the back wall, side walls, and any niches

STEP 2: Calculate Base Square Footage

Example Backsplash:

  • Wall length: 120 inches (10 feet)
  • Height: 18 inches (1.5 feet)
  • Calculation: 10 × 1.5 = 15 square feet

Example Floor:

  • Room: 12 feet × 10 feet = 120 sq ft
  • Closet: 4 feet × 3 feet = 12 sq ft
  • Total: 120 + 12 = 132 square feet

STEP 3: Subtract Obstructions (if applicable)

Outlets, windows, and fixed elements don't need tile. Subtract these if they're large.

When to subtract:

  • Windows larger than 4 square feet
  • Large appliance alcoves
  • Built-in furniture

When NOT to subtract:

  • Small outlets (waste from cuts offsets this)
  • Standard door openings (you'll need tile for transitions)
  • Under cabinets or vanities (leave these in the calculation)

STEP 4: Add Overage Percentage

Choose your overage based on the table above.

Example (Straight Lay Pattern - 10% overage):

  • Base square footage: 132 sq ft
  • Overage: 132 × 0.10 = 13.2 sq ft
  • Total needed: 132 + 13.2 = 145.2 square feet

Round up to 146 square feet

Example (Herringbone Pattern - 18% overage):

  • Base square footage: 132 sq ft
  • Overage: 132 × 0.18 = 23.76 sq ft
  • Total needed: 132 + 23.76 = 155.76 square feet

Round up to 156 square feet

STEP 5: Convert to Boxes

Tile is sold by the box. Check your tile's coverage per box.

Common Box Coverage:

  • Small format (under 6"): ~10-12 sq ft per box
  • Medium format (12"): ~15-18 sq ft per box
  • Large format (24"+): ~20-32 sq ft per box

Example:

  • Total needed: 146 sq ft
  • Tile coverage: 15 sq ft per box
  • Calculation: 146 ÷ 15 = 9.73 boxes

Always round UP: Order 10 boxes

📐 Pattern-Specific Considerations

Running Bond (Offset):

Subway Tile (3×6, 4×12, etc.)

  • Use 10% overage for standard layouts
  • Use 15% if running vertically or in tight spaces

Straight Stack:

Use 10% overage (simplest pattern)

Herringbone:

  • Use 18-20% overage
  • Every tile requires two 45° cuts

Mosaic Sheets

  • Sold in square foot sheets
  • Calculate same as standard tile
  • Use 10-12% overage
  • Note: cutting mosaics often requires destroying partial tiles

Specialty Shapes (Hexagon, Arabesque, Zellige)

  • More complex layouts = more waste
  • Use 15-20% overage
  • Hand-made tiles (like Zellige) have higher variation—order extra for sorting

Large Format Tile (24"×24" or larger)

  • Breakage during cutting is more costly
  • Less room for error in layout
  • Use 15% overage minimum
  • Consider ordering an extra box beyond your calculation

Understanding Overage Percentages

You'll need more tile than your raw square footage calculation. Here's how much extra to add based on your installation:

Standard Overage Guide

Common Backsplash Scenarios

Kitchen Backsplash (Standard)

Typical Specs:

  • Length: 10-12 linear feet
  • Height: 18" (counter to cabinet)
  • Pattern: Subway, straight or offset

Calculation Example:

  • 12 feet × 1.5 feet (18") = 18 sq ft
  • Overage (10%): 18 × 0.10 = 1.8 sq ft
  • Total: ~20 square feet

Full Wall Backsplash (Floor to Ceiling)

Typical Specs:

  • Length: 10 feet
  • Height: 8 feet (standard ceiling)
  • Pattern: Large format or feature tile

Calculation Example:

  • 10 feet × 8 feet = 80 sq ft
  • Subtract window (if applicable): 80 - 12 = 68 sq ft
  • Overage (15%): 68 × 0.15 = 10.2 sq ft
  • Total: ~78 square feet

Backsplash Behind Range (Feature Area)

Typical Specs:

  • Length: 4 feet (width of range)
  • Height: 2.5 feet (counter to hood)
  • Pattern: Decorative, often diagonal or herringbone

Calculation Example:

  • 4 feet × 2.5 feet = 10 sq ft
  • Overage (18%): 10 × 0.18 = 1.8 sq ft
  • Total: ~12 square feet

Common Floor Scenarios

Small Bathroom (5×8)

Calculation:

  • 5 feet × 8 feet = 40 sq ft
  • Overage (10%): 40 × 0.10 = 4 sq ft
  • Total: ~44 square feet

Master Bathroom (10×12)

Calculation:

  • 10 feet × 12 feet = 120 sq ft
  • Overage (12%): 120 × 0.12 = 14.4 sq ft
  • Total: ~134 square feet

Kitchen (12×14)

Calculation:

  • 12 feet × 14 feet = 168 sq ft
  • Overage (10%): 168 × 0.10 = 16.8 sq ft
  • Total: ~185 square feet

Shower & Tub Surrounds

Standard Tub Surround (3 Walls)

Typical Dimensions:

  • Back wall: 5 feet wide × 6 feet tall = 30 sq ft
  • Side walls (2): 3 feet wide × 6 feet tall × 2 = 36 sq ft
  • Total base: 66 sq ft

Subtract tub opening (if tiling around tub, not over):

  • 5 feet × 1.5 feet = 7.5 sq ft
  • Adjusted base: 66 - 7.5 = 58.5 sq ft

Add overage (15%):

  • 58.5 × 0.15 = 8.77 sq ft
  • Total: ~67 square feet

Walk-In Shower

Typical Dimensions:

  • Back wall: 4 feet × 8 feet = 32 sq ft
  • Side walls: 3 feet × 8 feet × 2 = 48 sq ft
  • Floor: 4 feet × 3 feet = 12 sq ft
  • Total base: 92 sq ft

Add niche:

  • 1.5 feet × 1 foot × 3 sides = ~4.5 sq ft
  • Adjusted base: 92 + 4.5 = 96.5 sq ft

Add overage (15%):

  • 96.5 × 0.15 = 14.47 sq ft
  • Total: ~111 square feet

🛠️ Pro Tips from Emerald Fern

1. Always Round Up

Never round down when calculating boxes. It's better to have one extra box than to run short.

2. Keep Extra Tile

Save at least 3-5 extra tiles (or one unopened box) for future repairs. Dye lots change, and matching tile years later is nearly impossible.

3. Check Return Policies

Some tile can be returned if unopened. Ask before ordering if you're between box quantities.

4. Pattern Dry Lay First

Before committing to a pattern, dry lay a section of tile to visualize the layout and confirm your overage is adequate.

5. Account for Grout Lines

Large grout lines (1/4" or more) reduce coverage slightly. This is already built into most overage calculations, but worth noting.

6. Budget for Breakage

Even with careful handling, some tile breaks during transport or installation. Your overage accounts for this—don't skip it.

7. Irregular Rooms Need More

Rooms with lots of angles, alcoves, or diagonal walls need higher overage (15-20%). Every custom cut creates waste.

8. Natural Stone Varies

If using natural stone, order 20% overage and inspect all boxes upon delivery. Natural variation means some tiles won't make the cut aesthetically.

Quick Reference: Overage Cheat Sheet

Grab-and-Go Percentages:

  • Simple straight lay: 10%
  • Offset/running bond: 10-12%
  • Diagonal: 15%
  • Herringbone/Chevron: 18-20%
  • Irregular room: 15-20%
  • Natural stone: 15-20%
  • Large format (24"+): 12-15%
  • First-time DIYer: Add 5% to any of the above

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Measuring in Different Units

Mixing inches and feet creates errors. Convert everything to feet before calculating.

❌ Forgetting Vertical Surfaces

Backsplashes, shower walls, and tub surrounds are easy to underestimate. Measure carefully.

❌ Assuming All Boxes Are Equal

Coverage per box varies by manufacturer. Always check the label.

❌ Skipping Overage

"I'll be careful and won't waste any" is a fantasy. Waste is inevitable. Build it in.

❌ Not Accounting for Pattern Direction

Running tile vertically vs. horizontally can change waste factors, especially with planks.
