How to measure a kitchen
Build a clear record of the room.
The goal is not a perfect design on the first sketch. It is a complete, legible record of the walls, openings, utilities, appliances, and conditions that affect the cabinet plan.
- 01Sketch each wall and label the room orientation so the measurements stay connected to the correct surface.
- 02Record wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling dimensions, then measure doors, windows, trim, and the distance from each opening to the adjacent corner.
- 03Mark plumbing, electrical, vents, soffits, radiators, and any obstruction that could change cabinet depth, height, or placement.
- 04List appliance models or finished dimensions when known, and photograph every wall plus any unusual condition.
Choose the right guide
One project can need three different kinds of measurement.
Cabinets depend on walls, openings, appliances, and utilities. Tile and flooring depend on surface area, layout, transitions, cuts, and the installation plan. Keep each set of measurements distinct.

Do my first measurements have to be exact?
They should be careful and complete enough to begin planning, but they are not a substitute for final field verification. Mark any measurement you are unsure about so it can be reviewed before release.
What photos should I include?
Photograph every wall from straight on when possible, then add close views of openings, utilities, soffits, vents, unusual corners, and any condition that could affect product placement or installation.
What if I have not selected appliances yet?
Share the appliance type and the size range you are considering. The final model or verified finished dimensions and required clearances must be confirmed before the cabinet order is approved.
Can Emerald Fern Finishes verify the measurements for me?
Submit the project through assisted design and the team will confirm what information is needed for the planning process. Responsibility for final field verification and written order approval will be confirmed before release.
